Practical Driving Test Tips - Emmergency Stop
Problem Reason Solution
You braked incorrectly Because you eased off at the end of the braking Keep the pressure-firmly on until the car comes to a complete stop (discuss braking in thirds)
You braked incorrectly Because you pumped the brake unnecessarily Use firm progressive pressure on the pedal
You braked incorrectly Because you stamped on the pedal Use firm progressive pressure on the pedal
You braked incorrectly Because your foot caught the gas and brake pedal together Swivel your right foot to the left sufficiently so that it can press squarely on the brake pedal without interfering with other pedals (consider footwear)
You braked incorrectly Because you took your hand off the wheel to apply the handbrake / to select neutral Apply the handbrake / select neutral only when the car is stationary
You braked incorrectly Because you panicked and took your hand(s) off the wheel Tighten your grip on the wheel just before you start braking and don’t take your hands off until the car has stopped completely
You didn’t react quickly enough Because you paused between hearing / seeing the signal and reacting React instantly, as soon as you’re given the signal
You didn’t react quickly enough Because you took too long to move your right foot over to the brake pedal Pivot your foot rapidly from the gas-to the-brake
You didn’t react quickly enough Because you weren’t concentrating Keep your mind on your driving at all times - give yourself a running commentary to keep to the tasks in hand
You didn’t react quickly enough Because you didn’t expect it Anticipate that an emergency could happen anywhere at any time and be prepared to react immediately
You skidded Because you braked too harshly Apply less pressure, say, 10% less
You skidded Because you didn’t assess the road surface Look at the road surface and adjust your braking to suit
You skidded, sliding in a straight line, but did not correct it Because you didn’t realise the wheels had locked and you were skidding Use cadence braking - release and reapply the brakes - as soar as the wheels lock (demonstrate cadence braking and advise on how to tell if the car is skidding
You skidded, the rear of the car went to the left / right Because you didn’t realise the car was-skidding Be aware of movement of the rear of the car and steer into the skid to straighten the car up
You took too long to stop Because you put the clutch down too early Put the clutch down just before the vehicle stops. The pedal can go down very briskly.
You took too long to stop Because you didn’t brake firmly enough Brake twice as firmly (advise / demonstrate)
You veered as you stopped Because you looked at the mirror(s) before / as you braked Don’t check the mirrors before you brake - it will cause you to travel -further and veer
