Practical Driving Test Tips — Approaching Junctions
| Problem | Reason | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Pedestrians or cyclists are overlooked | Observation is concentrated only on motor traffic. | Check pavements, cycle facilities and blind spots. Give way to people crossing or waiting to cross the road into which or from which you are turning, as required by the Highway Code. |
| The approach speed is too high | Speed was not reduced soon enough for the available view. | Slow to a speed that allows you to stop before entering the new road if necessary. Select an appropriate gear without coasting. |
| The junction is noticed too late | The road ahead is not being scanned far enough in advance. | Look for signs, markings, gaps in buildings and changing traffic. Begin the mirrors-signal-manoeuvre and position-speed-look routines early enough to stay in control. |
