These two questions check your understanding of basic vehicle safety during the car test in England, Scotland and Wales. Learn how the controls and checks work in the car you will actually use.
When are the questions asked?
Before driving, you explain a safety check in response to a ‘tell me’ question. During the drive, you demonstrate a control for the ‘show me’ question when it is safe.
How are they marked?
Getting either or both answers wrong results in one driving fault. Dangerous or potentially dangerous driving while carrying out the demonstration results in a failed test. Keep attention on the road and choose a safe opportunity.
Practise understanding, not just answers
Use the current DVSA question and answer set with your instructor. It covers checks such as tyres, lights and fluid levels, plus controls such as washers, demisters and the horn. Some ‘tell me’ questions require you to open the bonnet and identify the relevant item.
First locate the controls while parked, then practise using them safely during supervised lessons. If changing cars before the test, repeat that familiarisation. Ask your instructor to explain anything you do not understand; the aim is useful knowledge for everyday driving.
