Guidance reviewed: 16 October 2026
A little preparation makes test day easier. This guide covers car tests in England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland has separate arrangements.
Before leaving home
Bring your UK driving licence, your theory pass certificate if you have it, and a suitable car. Without the required items, the test can be cancelled without a refund. If your theory certificate is missing, the examiner can check your pass electronically.
A paper licence needs a valid passport. A Northern Ireland licence needs its photocard and paper counterpart. Check the official what-to-take guide if your licence is missing or your circumstances differ.
Arrange the car beforehand
Confirm use of your instructor’s car in advance. If using your own, check the full official vehicle requirements, including insurance for the test, roadworthiness, examiner mirror and suitable seating. Do this early rather than discovering a problem at the test centre.
What you will do
Expect an eyesight check, two vehicle-safety questions, driving in different conditions and a reversing exercise. Driving lasts around 35 minutes, including 20 to 35 minutes following a sat nav, signs or both. Motorways are excluded.
The reversing task may involve parallel parking, bay parking or reversing after pulling up on the right. An emergency stop may also be requested. A wrong turning alone is not a fault: keep driving safely and follow the examiner’s guidance.
Support on the day
You can ask for an instructor, friend or relative over 16 to observe and hear the feedback, subject to the observer rules. They cannot assist with the test.
Read GOV.UK’s test walkthrough, practise the vehicle-safety questions and discuss any concerns with your instructor. Check your readiness before test day.
